Version 0.8.0

Latest

Run checks finds broken links, misspelled words and other problems in your pages, and a new Settings screen brings every option together.

New

  • Run checks in the status bar finds problems in your pages: broken links and images, misspelled words, skipped heading levels, images without alt text, leftover conflict markers and TODOs, and passwords or keys pasted into a page. Check the page you are on or all pages. Checks run only when you ask, in the background, and can be cancelled. Check this page is in the page menu too.
  • The Problems panel lists what was found, grouped by page. Filter it by errors, warnings and info or by kind of problem, and click a problem to go right to it, also on a page that is not open yet. Pages with problems get a badge in the page tree.
  • Problems are underlined in Edit and in the Markdown source. Point at one, or press F8, to see what is wrong and fix it with one click; every fix can be undone. You can also ignore a problem once, ignore a rule on one page, or turn a rule off for the whole repository.
  • Autofix in the Problems panel fixes all listed problems that have a safe fix in one go, such as a word typed twice, a link whose upper and lower case does not match the file, or a product name spelled the wrong way.
  • Spelling in English and German, including long German compound words, and in many more languages. English (US) is built in; add other languages in Settings, where each dictionary is downloaded once and then works offline. A page can name its language in its front matter, such as lang: de. English accepts words borrowed with their accents, such as café, naïve and résumé, and Swiss German pages accept ss in place of ß. Words written in another alphabet than the page's language, such as Chinese or Russian words on an English page, are left alone.
  • Add words the spell checker does not know to the project dictionary, which your team shares through the repository, or to your own dictionary. A repository can also list the preferred spelling of terms in .gitedit/checks.json, such as GitHub instead of Github.
  • Links to other websites can be checked too, once you turn on Check links to other websites for the repository in Settings. Until then, running checks never uses the internet. The check only contacts public websites, never your computer or devices on your local network, even when a link or a redirect points there.
  • Settings > Checks shows the repository's shared checks settings and project dictionary: how many words the dictionary has, and what in the settings file has a problem and is skipped. Open file opens them in the app your computer uses for them; Create file starts a new one, ready to commit and share.
  • A new Settings screen, also open while you work in a repository, brings together appearance, pages and editing, spelling, changes and compare, diagrams, git and accounts.
  • Settings > Git shows which git program GitEdit.md uses and whether it was found automatically. Press Choose… to use another one, such as a newer git: GitEdit.md checks that it is git and new enough, and uses it right away, without a restart. Use the git found automatically goes back. When git is missing or too old, Open settings now leads straight to this section.
  • Images stored on other websites can wait until you ask for them: choose Click to load for Images from other websites in Settings. Pages then show a placeholder for each such image, in Read, Edit, the Markdown preview and in changes, and contact no other website until you click it. Load all images on this page loads the rest.
  • Remove a repository from Recent repositories on the start screen: point at it and press the ×, or select it and press Delete. Only the list entry goes; the folder is not changed.

Improved

  • Text size in Settings now makes page text larger or smaller in Edit and in the Markdown source too, not only in Read. Menus and panels keep their size.
  • The repository name at the top of the page tree now opens a menu with Switch repository…, Settings and Close repository, instead of closing the repository right away.
  • Undo takes back a paste, a drag and drop or a fix on its own: what you type right after it is undone separately.

Fixed

  • A branch that is open in another folder of the same repository (a git worktree) can now be opened from the branch list: it is marked other folder, and opening it switches the window to that folder instead of failing. The page you are reading stays open, and uncommitted changes stay in the folder you made them in. If that folder was deleted, Open it here opens the branch in the current folder.
  • Recent repositories on the start screen list a repository once, even when you work in several of its folders (git worktrees). The entry opens the folder you used last and shows the branch you had open, also after switching branches.
  • Images whose address starts with // now show in Edit, as they already did in Read.
  • Putting your set-aside changes back after a merge, or when you open a branch again, no longer fails now and then while another git tool is looking at the repository.
  • Right after opening a repository, Changes no longer shows every line of a staged page as added for a moment.
  • A branch switch, commit or other change made in another git tool now always shows in the status bar, also right after choosing another git program in Settings. Before, such a change could go unnoticed until the next one.

Security

  • Mermaid diagrams can no longer make the app contact other websites through their theme settings.

Version 0.7.0

Search the text of every page, and fold subpages away in the page tree.

New

  • Search the text of every page with Ctrl Shift F (⌘ Shift F on a Mac). Results show the matching words in context and open the page at the right section. Narrow them down by folder, tag or status, use quotes for an exact phrase, and put a minus in front of a word to leave pages out. When quick open finds no page or heading, it offers to search the page text instead.

Improved

  • In the page tree, click the page you are on to fold its subpages away, and click it again to show them. Clicking any other page still just opens it.

Fixed

  • Installing a new version on Windows no longer removes GitEdit.md from the taskbar and the Start menu, and no longer brings back a desktop shortcut you deleted. GitEdit.md's window now also shares the taskbar button of a pinned GitEdit.md instead of opening a second one.

Version 0.6.0

Read and Edit now apply to the whole app.

Improved

  • Read and Edit now apply to the whole app instead of one page: switch to Edit once and every page you open from the tree, a link or quick open is ready to edit, until you switch back to Read. The app remembers the mode the next time you start it.

Version 0.5.0

A git graph shows the whole history of every branch, and on Windows and Linux the window gives its title bar to the app.

New

  • Git graph: press Git graph in the status bar to see every local and remote branch and tag as one history, with branches, merges and your uncommitted changes. Select a commit to read its message and see which pages it changed, then open any page's changes side by side or inline. Fetch, pull, push and new branch are right at the top.

Improved

  • On Windows and Linux the window no longer has a separate title bar and menu bar: the top of each screen is the top of the window, with minimize, maximize and close at its right end. Drag the empty part of the top bar to move the window, and double-click it to maximize. Ctrl and +, - or 0 still zoom the window.

Version 0.4.0

Diagrams open much faster and get a read-only viewer, and the page tree can be made wider.

New

  • Drag the divider next to the page tree to make the left panel wider. Double-click it to go back to the default width. The app remembers the width.
  • Clicking a diagram in Read mode opens it in a viewer with zoom and pan. Edit diagram switches to the editor. Diagrams in old versions of a page open in the viewer too.

Improved

  • Diagrams open much faster. The diagram editor now gets ready in the background after the app starts, and stays ready after you close it, so the next diagram opens almost at once. If you prefer, turn off Prepare the diagram editor after start-up in Settings; the editor then gets ready the first time you open a diagram.

Fixed

  • In a side-by-side diff, the old side now shows the images and diagrams as they were in that version, not as they are now. Plain .drawio diagrams show in diffs and old versions instead of a broken image.
  • Merging, and bringing back changes you set aside, no longer fail right away while another program is using the repository; GitEdit.md waits a moment and tries again.
  • Switching to Edit right after discarding unsaved changes no longer sends the page back to Read mode.
  • On Windows, Push, Pull and Fetch now ask for your user name and password on every Git setup. On some setups the request used to fail without a message.
  • The "/" menu no longer keeps redrawing itself when the mouse pointer rests where it opens, which made its entries hard to click.

Version 0.3.0

draw.io diagrams arrive: create, edit and view them right next to your pages.

New

  • Edit draw.io diagrams in a large editor over the page. Save writes only the diagram file, Discard throws the changes away; neither touches the page itself.
  • New diagrams are .drawio.png files by default, so they show as images on GitHub too. Choose the page the image shows, or let it follow the page that is open when you save.
  • New diagram in the page tree's context menu and folder menu. Diagram files appear in the tree and open in a diagram viewer.
  • Plain .drawio files render in Read and Edit mode, with an offer to convert them to .drawio.svg. Converting renames the file and updates every link to it, and can be undone.
  • Recover unsaved changes: after a crash or an unexpected quit, review each kept draft side by side with the file on disk before you restore or discard it. Diagrams are included.
  • This page changed on disk: when another program changes a page you are editing, compare both versions and keep yours or take the one on disk. Diagrams get the same choice.

Improved

  • Merges now list changed images and other assets: the merge preview counts them, the "Merged cleanly" list shows them under their page, and a conflicting asset can be resolved by keeping one side.

Fixed

  • Edits typed in the last second or two before quitting are no longer lost.
  • A merge whose only conflict was an image no longer gets stuck.

Version 0.2.0

A faster app and a round of security hardening.

Improved

  • The app starts faster.
  • Switching between pages is faster, up to three times faster for pages you have already opened.
  • Opening a branch shows its progress at once: a bar along the top of the window and the current step in the status bar. If it fails, the branch picker reopens with the error.

Fixed

  • Opening a repository on Windows no longer flashes a console window.
  • Instruction files for coding agents (AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, GEMINI.md, Cursor and Copilot rules) no longer show up as pages in the page tree.
  • GitEdit.md no longer asks again whether to open a folder you started it with.

Security

  • The app opens, creates and clones repositories only in folders you picked or confirmed.
  • Repositories can be cloned only over HTTPS and SSH.
  • Opening a repository someone else prepared can no longer run programs on your computer.
  • Web pages can no longer start GitEdit.md through gitedit:// links.

Version 0.1.0

The first version of the desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

New

  • Open, create or clone a git repository and browse its documentation in a page tree.
  • Read pages rendered like on GitHub, including tables, task lists, code, math and Mermaid diagrams, with an outline of the page.
  • Edit pages in a WYSIWYG editor that writes plain GitHub Flavored Markdown and changes only the lines you touched, or switch to the Markdown source.
  • Create, rename, move and delete pages; links to them are kept up to date, and every change can be undone.
  • Find any page with quick open.
  • Review your changes as rendered or source diffs, then commit them. With nothing selected, Commit commits every change; each file can also be reverted on its own.
  • Work on branches: create and open them, compare them, and merge them with guided conflict resolution.
  • See the history of a page and open any earlier version.
